Brienz Rothorn Bahn Experience: Switzerland Travel Guide

Brienz Rothorn Steam Train

A Scenic Steam Train Journey Above Lake Brienz, Switzerland

Discover the magic of the Brienz-Rothorn Bahn, a historic Swiss steam railway that winds through Alpine forests and mountain meadows to breathtaking views of turquoise Lake Brienz and the Swiss Alps.

Switzerland is full of unforgettable landscapes, but some experiences allow you to appreciate its beauty in a completely different way. One of them is the Brienz-Rothorn Bahn, a historic steam railway that takes you from the charming lakeside village of Brienz high into the mountains of the Bernese Oberland. Imagine sitting in a vintage red carriage, listening to the rhythmic sound of a steam locomotive as it climbs through green forests, past Alpine meadows and around mountain slopes. With every turn, the scenery becomes more spectacular, revealing glimpses of Lake Brienz and the dramatic peaks surrounding it.

If you're planning a Switzerland itinerary, especially around Interlaken, Brienz or the Jungfrau region, this railway journey is well worth considering.

In this guide, I'll walk you through what makes the Brienz Rothorn Bahn special, what to expect during the journey, the views from the summit, practical tips for planning your visit and whether this Swiss mountain railway deserves a place on your itinerary.

What Is the Brienz Rothorn Bahn?

The Brienz Rothorn Bahn is a historic steam-powered cogwheel railway in Switzerland's Bernese Oberland. It runs from the village of Brienz, on the shores of Lake Brienz, up to the Rothorn Kulm mountain station. Opened in 1892, it remains one of the region's most distinctive mountain excursions.

The ascent typically takes about an hour, giving passengers time to enjoy the changing scenery along the route. Whether you're visiting Switzerland for the first time, travelling as a couple or exploring the Alps with family, the Brienz Rothorn Bahn offers a wonderful combination of heritage, scenery and mountain adventure.

If you're staying in Interlaken, you can take a train to Brienz and walk to the Brienz Rothorn Bahn station for your mountain excursion. This is what we did: we travelled into Interlaken, then caught a direct train to Brienz.

My Brienz Rothorn Bahn Experience

While Switzerland is famous for its panoramic trains, cable cars and mountain viewpoints, the Brienz Rothorn Bahn offers a more nostalgic way to experience the Alps. As soon as you see the traditional red carriages and the steam locomotive and scan your ticket to board, you realise this is no ordinary mountain railway. Its historic design gives the journey its own character, making it appealing even before the train begins its climb.

The hour-long journey begins as the locomotive starts climbing, and the atmosphere shifts. You can hear the engine working its way up the mountain while the scenery gradually changes from village landscape to a beautiful Alpine setting.

The route passes through forests, tunnels and open mountain terrain. The higher the train climbs, the more impressive the views become. Top hint make sure to sit on the right side if going uphill. You get incredible views both ways, with Lake Brienz appearing below and the surrounding mountains creating a spectacular natural backdrop. On the way back, try and grab the left-side seat.

One of my favourite parts I loved about scenic experiences like this is that you don't have to hike for hours to appreciate the landscape. You can sit back, enjoy the ride and capture/watch the scenery unfold in front of you.

The railway also offers plenty of chances for photography. I kept my camera out the whole way, as every bend the steam train took revealed another stunning view. The red carriages stand out against the green mountain slopes, while the lake and Alpine peaks add the kind of scenery that makes Switzerland so memorable.

If you're looking for a memorable Swiss experience beyond the usual viewpoints, consider the Brienz Rothorn Bahn. As you reach the top, you have a few hours to roam around and enjoy the views from above, depending on the time slot you purchased. If you're feeling peckish after the ride, you can dine at the restaurant, or if you're brave enough, you can go for a long hike, just make sure you have enough time to head back as per your ticket. There are plenty of photo opportunities here of the mountain, viewpoints and hikes too.

The Scenic Train Journey from Brienz to Rothorn Kulm

The railway journey is the highlight for many visitors, and it is easy to understand why.

1. The historic steam locomotive

The steam locomotive is one of the Brienz Rothorn Bahn's most distinctive features. Its traditional look, the sound of the engine and the red carriages in motion create a nostalgic atmosphere that feels very different from an ordinary train ride. Photography enthusiasts will find the locomotive a highlight in itself: you can shoot the train at the station before departure or capture the carriages against the mountain scenery.

2. Forests, tunnels and Alpine meadows

As the train climbs higher, it passes through wooded sections, tunnels and open mountain landscapes.

The contrast between the dense green forests and the more exposed slopes makes the journey visually interesting throughout. Rather than seeing the same scenery for the entire ride, you experience a gradual transition into the high Alps. There is also a midway stop at Planalp, where the locomotive traditionally takes on water before continuing its climb.

3. Beautiful views of Lake Brienz

One of the most memorable features of the route is the opportunity to admire Lake Brienz from above. The lake is famous for its vivid turquoise-blue water, which stands out against the green landscape and surrounding mountains. From the train and higher viewpoints, you can appreciate the scale of the lake and how beautifully it sits within the Alpine scenery.

If you enjoy landscape photography, keep your camera ready as the train climbs. The views change along the route, so make the most of the scenery rather than waiting until you reach the top.

4. The excitement of reaching the mountain

After approximately an hour of climbing, the train reaches Rothorn Kulm, the mountain station near the summit of Brienzer Rothorn.

The change in perspective is remarkable. From high above the lake, you can look out across the surrounding mountains and valleys, and the panorama feels far more expansive than the views from the village below. The train ride is beautiful in its own right, but reaching the top lets you stop, take photographs and soak up the scenery at your own pace.

What Are the Views Like at Brienzer Rothorn?

The viewpoint at the top is rewarding for the scenic journey, offering panoramic views across the Bernese Oberland and the surrounding Alpine landscape.

On a clear day, the outlook can include Lake Brienz, neighbouring mountain ranges and distant Alpine peaks. Depending on visibility, you may also be able to spot famous mountains such as the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Instead of looking up at the mountains from Interlaken or the lakeside, you can admire the landscape from above. Sadly, it was very cloudy when we visited, as some parts were too foggy to be seen. As the day went past, it started to clear, but by then it was time to head back.

The weather makes a big difference to the experience. On a clear day, the views can be spectacular, while low clouds or mist may hide the lake and distant peaks. If you want the best photo opportunities, check the forecast beforehand so you know what to expect.

Is the Brienz-Rothorn Bahn Worth Visiting?

In my opinion, I recommend this Brienz-Rothorn Bahn experience 100%, and as its well worth considering if you enjoy scenic train journeys, mountain views and experiences that feel distinctly Swiss.

What sets it apart from simply taking a cable car is the historic steam railway itself. The slow ascent, traditional carriages and changing landscape give you time to appreciate your surroundings.

It is particularly appealing for:

  • First-time visitors to Switzerland: A memorable way to experience the Swiss Alps.
  • Couples: A scenic outing with beautiful opportunities for photographs.
  • Families: An enjoyable mountain excursion that doesn't require a long uphill hike.
  • Photography lovers: A combination of vintage railway details, turquoise lake views and Alpine panoramas.
  • Nature enthusiasts: An opportunity to appreciate the landscape around Brienz from a higher viewpoint.

However, there are a few things to keep in mind. The railway operates seasonally, mountain weather can be unpredictable, and tickets can sell out during busy periods. Plan and book ahead so you don't miss out.

For travellers who love scenic journeys and want something more distinctive than a standard transport connection, the Brienz Rothorn Bahn is a top choice.

Brienz Rothorn Bahn Tickets and Prices

Ticket prices depend on the journey, applicable travel passes, discounts and the season.

Prices and ticket conditions can change, so I recommend checking the official booking website before finalising your plans. If you hold a Swiss Half Fare Card, you can enjoy discounts on many attractions. We had one, which brought our tickets down to 49 CHF each instead of the usual 98 CHF. I'd highly recommend getting one if you're planning to visit lots of attractions, as it can save you a lot.

A few useful booking tips:

  • Book ahead to guarantee a seat on a particular departure.
  • Check whether your Swiss Travel Pass, Half Fare Card or regional travel pass provides a discount.
  • Read the ticket conditions carefully, especially the rules for changes and refunds.
  • Check the operating schedule before travelling, as the railway does not run to the mountains throughout the entire year.

Best Time to Ride the Brienz Rothorn Bahn

The best time to visit depends on the type of scenery you want to experience and the railway's operating dates.

Summer: June to August

Summer is a popular time for the Brienz Rothorn Bahn because the railway operates to the summit during the main season, subject to the published timetable and weather conditions. We went during the first week of July.

The surrounding landscape is often lush and green, and the longer days provide more time to enjoy the views and nearby attractions. This is a good option for travellers who want to combine the railway with a boat trip on Lake Brienz or a visit to the village.

Early autumn: September to October

Early autumn can be a beautiful time to visit, with changing colours and a different atmosphere in the mountains. September is particularly appealing if you want to enjoy the scenery outside the busiest summer period. However, mountain weather can change quickly, so always check operating dates beforehand, especially towards the end of the season.

Winter and spring

The steam railway from Brienz does not operate to the mountain throughout winter. Early-season services may operate only as far as Planalp before the full route opens, depending on the official schedule.

My tip: Choose a day with good visibility rather than planning the excursion around a particular date alone. Clear skies can make a significant difference to the views from Rothorn Kulm.

What to Know Before Visiting

A little preparation can make your Brienz Rothorn Bahn experience much more enjoyable.

1. Check the weather. Conditions at the summit can be very different from those beside Lake Brienz. Check the mountain forecast before departure.

2. Dress in layers. Temperatures can be considerably cooler at altitude, even when the weather feels warm in the valley. Bring a light jacket and comfortable footwear.

3. Keep your camera ready. The scenery changes as the train climbs, so you may want to take photographs throughout the journey.

4. Allow enough time. Avoid treating the railway as a quick stop. The journey, summit visit and return trip deserve a generous portion of your day.

5. Check the return timetable. Before exploring the high viewpoint at the top, confirm the departure times so you can enjoy the views without worrying about missing your train.
